He said: “Avoid sugary food and sugary drinks, as these contribute heavily to the odds of contracting type 2 diabetes, which is probably the biggest diet-related condition threatening eyesight.
“High intake of carbohydrates, such as large amounts of white bread, pasta and white rice can also affect the eyes as they are broken down into sugar, which can cause diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration.”
One study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2007, found that the type of carbohydrate consumed could increase the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Specifically, high-glycemic-index carbs such as white rice, pasta and bread were to be avoided, while whole wheat versions of rice, pasta and bread did not impact vision.
