CNN — The majority of long Covid symptoms resolve within the first year after infection for people with mild cases of Covid-19, according to a large study conducted in Israel. “Mild disease does not lead to serious or chronic long term morbidity in the vast majority of patients,” said study coauthor Barak Mizrahi, a senior researcher at KI Research Institute in Kfar Malal, via email. The study, published Wednesday in the journal The BMJ, compared thousands of vaccinated and unvaccinated people with mild Covid symptoms who were not hospitalized with people who tested negative for the virus. Long Covid was…
CNN — Tap water is not sterile, and using it in home medical devices can result in serious and even deadly infections. But in a study published Wednesday in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, one-third of respondents to a survey incorrectly answered that tap water does not contain bacteria or other living organisms. In the August 2021 survey, more than half of 1,004 survey participants incorrectly said that tap water can be used for nasal rinsing, 50% believed is appropriate for rinsing contact lenses and 42% trusted it is safe for use in respiratory devices such as humidifiers or CPAP…
CNN — No new Ebola infections have been detected in Uganda for 42 days, and so on Wednesday, the World Health Organization and the Ugandan Ministry of Health officially declared that the country’s most recent outbreak of the deadly virus is at an end. The United States will also end screening and monitoring requirements for travelers from Uganda on Wednesday. The work of the response is far from over, however. Since the outbreak was officially recognized on September 20, 164 people have had confirmed or probable Ebola infections; there 55 deaths confirmed by lab testing, with another 22 deaths suspected…

The proliferation of such a diversity of variants is unprecedented and pits numerous hyper-mutated iterations against each other in a race for dominance. That’s turbo-charged Covid, making it one of the fastest-spreading diseases known to humanity and further challenging pandemic-mitigation efforts in a global population that has largely abandoned booster shots, testing and masking.1. How is omicron evolving? Omicron was first identified in southern Africa in late 2021,…
Comment on this storyCommentKevin McCarthy’s drawn-out humiliation at the hands of far-right tormenters as he sought to become House speaker dominated the news for understandable reasons: His inability to control his caucus is a big reason why Congress is shaping up to be a historic mess.Partly for that reason, a concurrent development didn’t get much notice, but ought to count as a hopeful sign that the Republican-led House might not immediately slide into chaos. For all the attention lavished on “destructionists” like Reps. Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert as they made McCarthy bow and plead for support, a larger group of…

The cleaning experts added: “Naturally, this technique works best when the wax is fresh and hasn’t been sitting too long or on top of clothing that could be damaged by freezing temperatures.”4. CNN — Vaccination rates for measles and other diseases dropped again last school year, according to a study published Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Coverage against measles dropped to the lowest it’s been in more than a decade. School requirements do not include the Covid-19 vaccine, which is explicitly banned from being included in school mandates in at least 20 states. However, that vaccine will become part of the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule for both children and adults this year. About 93% of kindergarteners enrolled in the 2021-22 school year got the required vaccines, including…
