Cruise made a point of emphasizing the intense training that the movie’s cast underwent during the project’s production process.
He recalled that ‘we worked with the navy and the Top Gun school to formulate how to shoot it practically, because if we’re going to do it, we’re going to fly F-18s.’
Bruckheimer stressed that ‘the aviation sequences had to be real. So, our actors went through three months of grueling training.’

At one point, several actors were seen working with Navy service members during aquatic practice sessions that involved performers being placed into a rotating device and being held underwater.
Cruise noted that ‘the Navy says: “If you eject, you have to be able to survive in the water.” So we had to go through that challenging underwater program.’
Several performers were then shown being submerged while going through a mock underwater evacuation session.
Cast member Greg Tarzan Davis commented: ‘It’s intense. You’re flipped, inverted, and you have to try to get out.
Barbaro also spoke about how Cruise adopted a hands-on method to preparing the performers for their roles in the movie.

Director Joseph Kosinski then remarked that the performers were also in charge of setting up their own shots while flying.
‘The actors also had to learn how to run cameras, because when they’re up in a jet, they had to direct themselves, essentially,’ he said.
Powell commented that, although asking cast members to fly planes and act at the same time was an intimidating task, Cruise wanted to elicit the best performances that he could from everyone in front of the cameras.

Jay Ellis described the project as ‘definitely the most amazing thing I’ve ever done. All of the training one hundred percent prepared us.’
Cruise concluded by stating: ‘I’m very proud of what we all accomplished. Each one of them is extraordinary.’
