Scientists using artificial intelligence have discovered a new antibiotic that can kill a deadly superbug. According to a new study published on Thursday in the science journal Nature Chemical Biology, a group of scientists from McMaster University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have discovered a new antibiotic that can be used to kill a deadly hospital superbug. The superbug in question is Acinetobacter baumannii, which the World Health Organization has classified as a “critical” threat among its “priority pathogens” – a group of bacteria families that pose the “greatest threat” to human health. According to the WHO, the bacteria…

The ban of plastic wipes could be brought in as early as next year, and certainly spells great news for the environment as wipes cause 93 per cent of blockages in sewers. Environmental experts have welcomed the news. “Soil Association Certification supports the proposed ban. Wet wipes made from plastic do not biodegrade, meaning they persist in the environment for years and leach microplastics into our ecosystems,” says Paige Tracey of the Soil Association. But celebrity facialist Kate Kerr says we shouldn’t be using cleansing wipes anyway. “I’m very pro the ban, not only for the environment but also for…
Artificial intelligence has become shockingly capable in the past year. The latest chatbots can conduct fluid conversations, craft poems, even write lines of computer code while the latest image-makers can create fake “photos” that are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. It wasn’t always this way. As recently as two years ago, AI created robotic text riddled with errors. Images were tiny, pixelated and lacked artistic appeal. The mere suggestion that AI might one day rival human capability and talent drew ridicule from academics. A confluence of innovations has spurred growth. Breakthroughs in mathematical modeling, improvements in hardware and computing…
Chris Packham said he has been vindicated after a judge found that he had been subjected to an online ideological campaign, accusing him of fraud and dishonesty, before awarding him £90,000 in libel damages. The prominent naturalist found his character, speech impediment and Asperger syndrome mocked in articles published on the Country Squire Magazine (CSM) website, which also accused him of lying to raise funds for a charity of which he is a trustee. In a damning written judgment published on Thursday, Mr Justice Saini criticised the conduct of the website’s editor Dominic Wightman and writer Nigel Bean for articles…
TikTok could soon have a new way for users to discover content. The company is in the “early stages” of an AI-powered chatbot, called Tako, which will be able to recommend videos and respond to queries about what users are watching. The bot, which was first by TechCrunch, is currently being tested in the Philippines, TikTok said in a statement. “Tako is powered by a third-party chat assistant and is designed to help make it easier to discover entertaining and inspiring content on TikTok,” the company said. Despite being in an early phase of testing, TikTok is apparently featuring…
If you’d worked tirelessly all your life to become one of the richest people on the planet, you could be forgiven for wanting to slow down, eat good food and pile on a few pounds. But that has not been the case for Jeff Bezos, who has transformed from a scrawny bookstore boss in the 90s to a buff billionaire at age 59 through grueling workouts and dieting. Before his stratospheric success, the lanky Bezos would not have looked out of place at one of the brick-and-mortar bookstores his burgeoning business threatened to topple. But the public was gripped by…
