Just like her 2011 wedding dress, Kate Middleton’s Coronation gown was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. Although the majority of Kate’s Coronation gown was hidden underneath her robe of The Royal Victorian Order, there were floral motifs at the hem that were visible for royal fans to see.
These floral motifs were shamrocks, roses, thistles and daffodils, in order to represent Britain and Ireland’s national flowers.
These motifs were sewn into the ivory dress using silver embroidery.
For many royal fans, this dress would have been seen as a throwback to the Princess of Wales’s wedding dress in 2011 when she married Prince William.
Her bridal gown, also designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, featured the exact same floral motifs along the hem.

Therefore, Kate’s Coronation gown was certainly a full-circle moment from when she walked down the aisle in 2011.
Both events took place in Westminster Abbey which also contributed to the significance of the moment.
The Princess paired her dress with a Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece with three-dimensional leaf embroidery made of silver thread, crystal, and gold.
It was a lovely coincidence because it matched Princess Charlotte’s headpiece also.
In addition, Princess Charlotte’s cape dress was similarly designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.
The mother and daughter duo did vary in one way, though. The Princess of Wales’s dress was covered by the mantle of the Royal Victorian Order.
In 2019, Queen Elizabeth II made Kate a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
Kate has worn Alexander McQueen during some of the most important events in her life as a royal, including her wedding and the christenings of her children.
Therefore, Kate wore a floral headpiece which technically was not a tiara, despite looking very much like one.
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh’s floral headpiece, on the other hand, looked more like a fascinator as opposed to a tiara.
Back in 2011, Kate paired her Alexander McQueen wedding dress with the Cartier Halo tiara.
This tiara is stunning and is made up of 739 brilliant-cut diamonds and 149 baguette diamonds.
