Placeholder while article actions loadHow would you feel about getting on a flight knowing that the pilot had been having suicidal thoughts? If you’re a regular passenger, you’ve probably already done it.Few things in aviation evoke greater horror than the prospect of a pilot who deliberately drives a plane into the ground. That’s what happened, notoriously, with Germanwings Flight 9525 in 2015, when 150 were killed after the first officer locked the captain out of the cockpit and steered the plane into an Alpine mountain. It’s such an alarming prospect that some suspected pilot suicides remain hotly disputed, as with the crash of EgyptAir…
Placeholder while article actions loadForget the battle over critical race theory. The latest salvos in the public-school culture wars are being fired over the federal charter schools program and the sensible guidelines that are being proposed by the administration of President Joe Biden.Congress extended the program in March, approving $440 million for state agencies to help charters with startup expenses such as staffing and technology. But what really stands out about this one is how drearily banal it was.Think of it reduced to a few headlines, just as the man himself reduces it to (so many, many) tweets.First: Mogul Overbids for Trophy Asset, Regrets It.Yes, there is a lot of detail here to get hung up on, from Musk’s pseudoscientific sample poll to the defense strategies of that pitiable gang known as the Twitter Inc. board of directors. Strip it away, though, and it is the…

Bombs had just dropped near his apartment in Lviv, Ukraine, but he had a conference call at 9 p.m. Klen was huddled, along with his dog, in his apartment hallway, trying to stay away from glass windows that could shatter. As the clock struck 9, he decided to take the meeting.Amid air raid sirens, flickering lights and family members texting to inquire whether he was safe, Klen — the founder of a technology start-up called Petcube that creates interactive cameras for pets —…
