Emerging from captivity in Gaza after 129 days, Fernando Simon Marman and Louis Har appeared thin and pale but with happiness and relief in their eyes. Their family said the two men are overjoyed at being reunited with their loved ones as they try to make sense of their four-month ordeal. Idan Begerano, Har’s son-in-law, said the family was shocked to be woken up at 3.30am by the Israeli authorities who urged them to make their way to Sheba Medical Centre in central Israel to greet the two men. Houston-based space company Intuitive Machines is gearing up for an actual moonshot at the end of this month, when it’ll try to land a spacecraft named Odysseus on the lunar surface — ideally without it breaking in the process. The mission follows Astrobotic’s unsuccessful attempt in January; that company’s lander, Peregrine, never made it to the moon due to a propellant leak that cut its journey short. Peregrine’s failure means Intuitive Machines’ IM-1 mission could be the first ever commercial moon landing if it makes it there intact. Intuitive Machines is hoping to make its landing attempt on February 22,…

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz.. — It took 170 flatbed trucks to haul one of the world’s biggest cranes — the height of two Statues of Liberty — to the outskirts of Phoenix to start building a $20 billion computer-chip factory. On the other side of town, an even bigger chip-manufacturing project is rising from the desert, requiring 12,000 construction workers and $40 billion of investment. Phoenix is a boom town, thanks in part to President Biden. The promise of federal subsidies from the Biden-backed Chips and Science Act of 2022 has sparked some of the biggest investment projects in the nation’s…

Researchers have taken a major step towards a blood test that can predict the risk of dementia more than a decade before the condition is formally diagnosed in patients. Hopes for the test were raised after scientists discovered biological markers for the condition in blood samples collected from more than 50,000 healthy volunteers enrolled in the UK Biobank project. Analysis of the blood identified patterns of four proteins that predicted the onset of dementia in general, and Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia specifically, in older age. When combined with more conventional risk factors such as age, sex, education and genetic…

As President Biden met with heads of state around the world these past couple of years, he’s been repeating a curious phrase. This obscure technology for cellular towers — which the Brookings Institution once dubbed the “Huawei killer” — is Washington’s anointed champion to try to unseat Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies from its throne as the largest supplier of the “pipes” that carry the world’s internet data and phone calls.Open radio access networks, or Open RAN, is an emerging technology for cell towers that allows for the use of mix-and-match parts from different vendors — a little akin to Google’s…

Welcome to the weekend. First, read our Vision Pro review, but also try not to look directly at Devindra’s Vision Pro avatar. I think it may be cursed. Yes, Apple’s vision of the future of computing is here to bleed early adopters of thousands of dollars. I half-joke: Apple has brought its intelligence to AR, gesture interfaces and high-technology (those screens!) to drop jaws around the world. But you might not need one just yet. We also touch on the biggest podcast in the world getting bigger and those perennial folding iPhone rumors. It might happen, but you’ll probably get…

While the trio of Brest, Monaco and Nice are still firmly in the driver’s seat for France’s Champions League allocation, another more familiar contender may be entering the frame if the recent results of Lens are anything to go by.A comprehensive 3-1 home win over Strasbourg, their third in a row in the league, was impressive indeed, not only for how they expressed their solidity – as they had in previous wins over Nantes and Toulouse – but for their bravura performance in attack. In those previous wins Lens had kept clean sheets but there was something of the scrappy…
