Virgin Media is fighting back against Sky with an offer of ludicrously cheap broadband and TV. Sky launched its Black Friday sale event earlier this week with the firm boasting that it has broadband at its lowest-ever price. Although Sky’s deals start from just £23 per month, its 36Mbps speeds are pretty slow and this is where Virgin Media hopes it has the advantage. Thanks to its new Black Friday sale, customers can currently get speedy 132Mbps downloads for £25 per month. If that doesn’t sound fast enough don’t worry as you can also get Virgin’s 362 Mbps speeds for just…

A series of surveys have shown pay for corporate leaders rebounding to match or surpass pre-Covid levels. The latest, from PwC this week, pegged average total annual compensation for CEOs in the FTSE 100 at £3.9 million ($4.5 million), an increase of more than 20% driven mostly by bonus payouts. That strikes a dissonant note in a recession-bound economy where nurses are planning to walk out over a below-inflation offer.CEOs might say that they have earned their windfalls.…
Comment on this storyCommentThe boom in so-called ESG investing has been accompanied by a sharp rise in complaints about greenwashing — exaggerations or misleading statements about environmental claims. It’s a rise driven by the so-called “greenium” — the money companies can save by convincing lenders to offer better terms when borrowing is tied to an ESG (environmental, social or governance) goal. Figuring out what’s real and what isn’t has grown even more complicated in debt markets, where a host of new lending formats have been introduced, including some that link payment terms to progress on specific ESG goals. Here are…

Prior to the election, I saw essay after essay pre-emptively lambasting Democrats for being too focused on this supposedly fringe women’s issue. Surely, talking so much about wombs would lead them down the primrose path to electoral defeat. While it would be reductionist to claim that concerns over abortion were the sole driver of Democrats’ strong turnout in Tuesday’s midterm election — weak Republican candidates and their lack of any specific economic plan other…

Across social media, posts can fly up faster than most fact-checkers and moderators can handle, and they’re often an unpredictable mix of true, fake, out of context and even propaganda. This kind of misinformation spikes before, during and after elections including this week’s midterms. Look out for confusing narratives about everything from how to vote to who actually won specific races. How do you know what to trust, what not to share and what to flag to tech companies?…
Manchester City’s class pulled them away from Chelsea after the break on a night when Jack Grealish shone and Gareth Southgate was heartened by Kalvin Phillips’ 41-minute cameo that more than doubled his previous total season game-time ahead of Thursday’s announcement of the England manager’s World Cup squad.City, who have a fond relationship with this trophy, deserved to win, and Grealish’s sparkling display is a nice augury for the Three Lions’ hopes in Qatar. Pep Guardiola, though, will focus solely on how his side’s obsessive will to win carried them through in a cup the club has claimed six times…

Its residents embody Lovettsville’s small-town character by fostering a tightknit community.“People genuinely care about each other in this neighborhood,” said Alissa Biechlin, president of the Dutchman’s Creek homeowners association. “If somebody’s sick, had a surgery or had something unexpected happen, people will bring meals or help you run your kids somewhere. Everyone is willing to give a helping hand at any time.”At the base of Short Hill Mountain in northwest Loudoun County, Dutchman’s…

The Bitcoin is a cybercurrency that has attracted a lot of media attention over the last couple of years, and continues to do so. Bitcoin was set up by an anonymous group or individual in 2009, who used the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, after whom the smallest unit of Bitcoin currency is named. It is the first and arguably the most widely known cryptocurrency. Originally only of interest to the internet elite, the Bitcoin has gained wider appeal in recent years and commands respect in its own right on the foreign exchange. How does Bitcoin work? The finer details of how…
